THREE EXHIBITIONS IN A BOX (China/International)
NOMANSLAND/ANYMANSLAND/STRAITS
A distinct selection of video art, divided over three exhibitions, is confronted with a physical framework. Content comes from the artworks, we just set the borders -- literally -- through the use of different boxes. We argue that a box functions as a powerful metaphor: isn’t video all about capturing an image and putting it into a box?
As a border is set, the question on how to overcome them immediately rises. The work at display consequently bends and deconstructs the idea of the box, giving rise to a landscape of leftover shapes and forms. The physical presence of the box is finally swept away and replaced by a mental state, an object in nature or a territory, and so an “anymansland” ends up to be a “nomansland.”

BOX ONE: ANYMANSLAND GROUP EXHIBITION
Guo Peng (Kunming, China),Terry Lai (Hong Kong),Anne Penders (Belgium),Timo Vaitinnen (Finland),Anssi Pulkkinen(Finland),Pawel Wojtasik (Poland/USA),Wu Ershan(Beijing, China),Wu Quan(Beijing, China),Han Zi,Tang Xiru,Lu Yitong,Pang Wenlong,Liang Wei and Li Zhenhua (Beijing, China)
This show explores the perception of the video image as a malleable entity. Artworks become journeys, the imaginary blurres our daily visual experience. How does an intrinsic flat movement generate a spatial narrative? Just like a video plays with our senses, we manipulate the public’s perception by guiding them through a “boxed” itinerary.

ANYMANSLAND INSTALLATIONS
In the sideline of the international exhibition in Platform China A, we present work from Guan Shi and Ai Weiwei (China), scattered all over the 798 factory and Caochangdi. Discover the work as you stroll along the Borderline itinerary.

BOX TWO: NOMANSLAND GROUP EXHIBITION
Jean-Sebastien Lallemand (France), Elaine Ho and David Gibbs (China/US), Stefaan Dheedene(Belgium), Hee-Yeon Park (Korea) and Ou Ning (Guangzhou,China).
In this exhibition, video functions as a document. By focusing on descriptive issues related to cultural, geographical and political zoning, borderlines become open narratives. Questions on immigration, grey areas -- so-called nomansland -- and cultural identity rise through the work of 5 video artists, and 1 architect. Hee-Yeon Park en Ou Ning will host a roundtable discussion on the topic.
